Girls of Kerala Industrial Training Institute (ITI) lauded the Kerala state government's stand on the Sabarimala issue and added that given an opportunity, they would want to enter the temple as well.

The female students, while talking to DNA, said women have been deprived for decades. "Why should there be a discrimination in the house of God? Not letting women enter the temple was an insult to women. Given an opportunity, I will definitely want to enter the temple," said Athulya KP, 18. Hailing from a lower middle class family in the vicinity, she aspires to acquire technical skill and earn a respectable living for the family.

Her batchmate, 19-year-old Sreeshma EM, a trainee of the fitter's course at the institute echoed similar emotions. "One of the most revered pilgrimages, Sabarimala, had been a taboo for girls. Now that the state government has decided to implement the Supreme Court order, we want to have a first-hand experience. So far we only heard stories of the place as if it was a fairy tale," she said talking to DNA.

Another student, Smita Ganesh, said they would request the institute authorities to carry out an excursion trip to the temple. "If the institute conducts a trip, it will be convenient for those coming from lower middle class families who would otherwise have financial constraints to visit the place," she said.

Interestingly, these girls are also going to vote for the first time in the forthcoming general election. Political analysts said it would give a positive fillip to the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government of Kerala.

Principal of the ITI, R Ravikumar, however, said there were certain technicalities in arranging for such a trip. "Girls of many faiths get training here so arranging a trip to the temple might be difficult, but since the Supreme Court has ordered that women of all ages can enter the temple and the state government has implemented the order, if some girls want to go there on their own, they are most welcome," Ravikumar told DNA.

GOOD FOR LDF

  • Several female students of Kerala ITI say they would like to visit Sabarimala temple now that the state has implemented SC order.

  • Interestingly, these girls are also first-time voters, and it may give positive fillip to the ruling LDF government.
