Athira and her friend Shabana J were picked by cops who found their behaviour ‘suspicious’. They were picked up at 2:30 AM near the hospital. The police took them in after they found their statements contradictory. While the women were let off after 30 minutes, she went back to the hospital, rushed to her room and consumed poison. She was taken to Kozhikode Medical College, where she died on Sunday.

Her death led to protest marches by women’s groups who demanded an investigation.  A special investigation team has been set up to investigate the matter.
