There has not been any major breakthrough so far, except that the police had released sketch of the main suspect of the horrific incident. So far no person has been arrested in the case, though three has been detained.

The brutality of the case has sparked comparison with the Nirbhaya case.

A Dalit female law student, hailing from a poor family was raped and brutally assaulted using sharp edged weapons before being murdered at her house at Perumbavoor in Ernakulam district on April 28.

"We have complained earlier against certain individuals who used to threaten us, but the police did not take any action," the victim's sister told Amnesty.

NCW report had said that the previous police team probing into the case did not conduct a fair investigation.

NCW had taken suo  moto cognizance of the incident and set up an inquiry committee which found several lapses. "NCW found that there were several gaping holes in the investigation. All avenues of the matter were not explored and it seemed that the administration was merely searching for a scapegoat rather than conducting the inquiry in a fair and impartial manner. It was also observed that police conducted the probe in a lackadaisical and apathetic manner. For example,  postmortem  was allegedly conducted by a post-graduate student and the crime scene was compromised," the report alleged.
