Kerala: Customs seize 1-kg compound gold from passenger at Kozhikode airport

"Customs team in Kozhikode International Airport seized 1,096 grams of compound gold from a passenger who arrived from Sharjah by Air Arabia flight G9454 yesterday night," an official statement read.

The customs department seized 1,096 grams of gold from a passenger at Kozikhode international airport on Friday.

"Customs team in Kozhikode International Airport seized 1,096 grams of compound gold from a passenger who arrived from Sharjah by Air Arabia flight G9454 yesterday night," an official statement read.

The gold was concealed in the rectum of the passenger in the form of five capsule-shaped packets.

The gold was seized under the Customs Act 1962.

Further investigation is underway.

In a separate development, Kerala Higher Education Minister KT Jaleel has been directed by the Customs to appear before the agency officials on Monday.

Jaleel has been questioned for several hours by the National Investigation Agency and the Enforcement Directorate in the past in connection with the gold smuggling case

The Customs unearthed the gold smuggling case when PS Sarith, a former employee of the UAE Consulate in Thiruvananthapuram, was arrested on July 5 while he was allegedly facilitating the smuggling of 30 kg gold in diplomatic baggage to the state capital from Dubai.
