Students of the academy were holding a strike against the college principal and television personality Lakshmi Nair, demanding her resignation.

According to Gulf News, students were complaining against her alleged high-handedness and accused her of racial abuse, but she has denied it.

BJP activists from Peroorkada initiated a march supporting the students, which turned violent with police using water cannons and tear gas and hitting the protestors.

The violence injured several people and damaged police vehicles too.

CPI (M) state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan alleged that the students had fallen into BJP's trap.
