At least 15 shops were gutted and garments and other goods destroyed in a major fire that broke out on Wednesday at the busy SM Street in Kozhikode- but no casualties were reported, police said.

Seven fire tenders from the city and nearby areas tried to bring the fire under control for more than three hours, which started around 11.00 AM from a three storeyed textile shop. The reason for the fire was not known immediately, they said.

A huge fire in 2007 in the SM Street, had claimed eight lives and destroyed nearly 50 shops.
