Africans continued to live in fear in Greater Noida, a suburb of Delhi, as a young Kenyan woman was dragged out of a cab and thrashed by local residents on Wednesday morning, a day after the External Affairs Ministry condemned the racial attacks by a mob on the expatriates on Monday.

Maria Burendi, a Kenyan, has alleged that when she was on her way to Noida from Delhi, her cab was stopped by some local residents near Omi-crown area of Sector Pi 1 of Greater Noida.

A case under relevant sections has been registered against four unidentified men.

Adamu Mohommad, Burendi’s friend, narrating the incident said, “Burendi had taken an Ola cab from Delhi this morning and was travelling to Greater Noida to see her friends in Alstonia residential society. At around 4:30 in the morning, some locals intercepted the cab, dragged her out and slapped her. She is in deep trauma and is not able to speak to anyone about her horror.”

The woman was taken to a local hospital for medical examination where doctors suggested the possibility of an assault with injury marks on her hands.

“Burendi was admitted into the hospital with the complaints of assault. However, all medical investigations have shown no grievous injuries on her,” said Dr Sanil Kapoor, the medical superintendent of Kailash Hospital
“We gave her preliminary treatment and discharged her,” he added.

According to the police, four-five miscreants are involved in attacking the woman. The cab driver fled from the spot leaving the girl behind.

“We have contacted the Ola officials and are trying to get details about the cab and the driver. The Kenyan national has not sustained major injuries. We will take swift action in the case,” said Dharmendra Singh, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Gautam Budh Nagar.

“An FIR has been lodged under Indian penal court sections 147 and 148(rioting), voluntarily causing hurt (IPC 323), 504 ( intentional insult) and 506(criminal intimidation) against five unidentified men,” he added.

The African Nation Student Union has been asked by the SSP to inform the police before moving out of their houses as safety measures.

“Our nationals are really feeling unsafe living here after the attacks. The police has asked us to inform them before going out of our houses. A police official will be accompanying us to wherever we want to go. We feel so handicapped,”said Samuel Jack, President, Association of African Students.

Meanwhile, in the case of angry residents of Greater Noida allegedly thrashing African nationals at Pari Chowk of Greater Noida on Monday evening following the mysterious death of class 12 student Manish Khari, police have identified 60 more individuals and they will be arrested soon.

“We had already arrested seven and have identified 60 more individuals. They will be arrested soon,” said Sujata Singh Superintendent of Police (Rural).

Talking about attack on the girl, she said, “Basically, Alstonia society is mostly occupied by African nationals. Some miscreants must have targeted vehicles going towards that particular area. We have increased the patrolling in areas where Africans live. It is true that it is not possible to provide security to each and every person. There are criminals who are taking advantage of the situation. We are trying to organise cultural programmes as confidence-building measures.”

The police force in Greater Noida has been strengthened, and rapid action force and quick response teams are being deployed in the area, she added.
