Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said that the Congress is looking for allies outside India after failing to form 'Mahagathbandhan' of opposition parties to defeat the BJP.

Speaking at a Madhya Pradesh BJP workers' congregation in Bhopal, Modi said, "Congress party has not succeeded in forming 'Mahagathbandhan' in India. Even if gets allies and forms the 'Mahagathbandhan', the coalition will not be successful. That is why they are now looking for allies outside India. Now other countries will decide who will become the prime minister in India. What has become of the Congress. Have you lost your balance after losing power."

Mocking the Congress, the prime minister said the 125-year-old party has been reduced to such a condition that it is "begging" with small parties for alliances.

Addressing the rally where BJP chief Amit Shah and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan were also present, the prime minister said the opposition parties had formed the "Mahagathbandhan" (grand alliance) out of fear of losing the polls.

"Congress has become a burden on the country today. It is the responsibility of BJP workers in the democracy to save the country from it," he said.

In an apparent reference to allegations on the Rafale fighter deal, Modi said the Congress is indulging in mud-slinging against the government because it finds it easier than debating on issues like development.

"They (Congress) are indulging in mud-slinging because they find it easier... They have indulged in mud-slinging earlier too. But I want to tell them, the more you throw mud at us, the more the lotus (BJP's symbol) will bloom," Modi said.

Modi said the opposition party, instead of indulging in mud-slinging, should engage in a debate on issues like development which "they do not dare to".

An estimated 10 lakh party workers from 65,000 polling booths spread across 230 assembly constituencies in Madhya Pradesh will take part in the programme, Rajnish Agrawal, a state BJP spokesman, said before the event.

The event is being held on the occasion of birth anniversary of Hindutva icon and Bharatiya Jana Sangh (BJS) co-founder Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya. It will be the "world's largest congregation of political workers," another state BJP spokesman Sarvesh Tiwari said.

Along with Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Mizoram will also go to polls by the year-end.

Modi and Shah, two star poll campaigners of the BJP, are in Bhopal days after Congress chief Rahul Gandhi visited the state capital.

Gandhi held a roadshow and later addressed Congress workers and office-bearers during his September 17 visit.

Both the national parties are in poll campaign mode in the state, where the BJP is in power since 2003.

While the saffron outfit will seek a fourth straight term in office in the year-end elections, the Congress will look to wrest power from the BJP in a state which was once its stronghold.
