Three women were killed in a stampede during Kartik Poornima celebrations in Bihar's Begusarai today.

The incident occurred during morning prayers at the Simariya Ghat on the banks of river Ganga on Saturday.

Several people were badly hurt with 10 people suffering serious injuries in the stampeded.

Sadar Deputy Superintendent of Police Mithilesh Kumar said, "We are trying to ascertain the cause behind the stampede," adding that the women's identities have not been ascertained yet.

According to PTI, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has announced an compensation of Rs 4 lakh each for the families of the victims and free treatment for those injured in the incident.

Thousands of people have thronged at various river banks across the country on the occasion of Kartik Poornima. The occasion marks the only month in the Hindu calender where Lords Shiva and Vishnu are simultaneously worshipped.
