Karnataka: Under-construction building collapses in Dharwad, 2 dead, 28 rescued, many trapped

Many are feared trapped after an under-construction building collapsed in Kumareshwar Nagar, Dharwad in Karnataka on Tuesday. The concerned authorities have launched a search and rescue operation.

At least 2 people are declared dead, 28 have been rescued but several are still feared trapped after an under-construction building collapsed in Kumareshwar Nagar, Dharwad in Karnataka on Tuesday. The concerned authorities including NDRF and SDRF teams are carrying the search and rescue operation. According to reports, at least 20 people have been shifted to Dhanwad civil hospital while 3 have been referred to KIMS Hubli. 

Deputy Commissioner Dharwad said oxygen and water have been provided to 7 people who are trapped under the debris. The rescue operation will continue at night, she added.

The person who lost his life in the building collapse has been identified as Salim. He was 35 years old. 

The cause of the building collapse is also not known yet but the locals are alleging that the quality of material used in construction was poor. Around 10 ambulances and 4 JCBs have been dispatched to the incident site to speed up the rescue operation.   


Karnataka chief minister HD Kumaraswamy took to Twitter and said, "Shocked to learn about the collapse of an under-construction building in Dharwad. I have instructed the Chief Secretary to supervise rescue operations. I have also directed the CS to send additional resources and expert rescuers by a special flight to Dharwad. The rescue operation is on and five people have been extricated, so far, from the debris. I have instructed the concerned officials to be on location."

Few hours later, Chief Minister Kumaraswamy said, "The rescue work is on a war footing About 25 people have been rescued and three persons are seriously injured. The injured are being treated. I request the local public not to panic and all those feared trapped in the building will be rescued ASAP."

"I am closely monitoring rescue work at the #Dharwad building collapse site. A special 25-member NDRF team is being brought for the rescue operations from Lucknow by a special flight. A 5-member team of experts from Bengaluru is on site& another 25-member team will soon reach the spot," he added. 

 

A JDS leader and former corporater Srikant said he had left for lunch and was lucky to escape from the building collapse. The JDS leader had an office in the building which collapsed a while ago.
