A First Information Report (FIR) has been filed against Congress interim Chief Sonia Gandhi for her "misleading tweets" made from party~s official twitter handle INCIndia on May 11 about PM CARES fund in Shimoga, Karnataka.

The FIR was filed against Gandhi based on a complaint made by an advocate, KV Praveen, from Karnataka`s Shivamogga district for the above-mentioned reason.

FIR has been registered against her under IPC sections 153,505.

It was alleged in the complaint that Congress was attempting to create distrust among the masses against the Prime Minister by stating that he utilised the PM CARES funds for personal use and not for the poor people.

Following the incident, Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) President DK ShivKumar wrote a letter to the Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa urging him to withdraw the FIR against her, and immediately suspend the police officer in charge of filing the FIR.

He also asked the chief minister to register an FIR against the said police officer for "misusing the process of law in the interest of justice and equity.’’

"Sonia Gandhiji being an MP and Congress President had tweeted with the intention of forcing the Prime Minister to use the Care Fund for the welfare of the people of the country. Unfortunately, this was misinterpreted by the BJP leadership and an FIR was filed against Sonia Gandhi based on false information without examining its truthfulness. The Sagar Police has registered an FIR against her which is a blatant misuse of the process of law with an intention to snub the right to healthy criticism," he mentioned in the letter.

PM Cares is an emergency situation relief fund that was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 28 where people can contribute to the government's fight against coronavirus.
