A bandh has been called on Thursday by some Kannada outfits in Karnataka demanding implementation of Sarojini Mahishi report on providing more jobs for Kannadiga youths in the government and the private sectors.

A committee headed by former union minister Sarojini Mahishi was constituted in 1984 to recommend job opportunities for Kannadigas in Karnataka.

The bandh called by "Karnataka Sanghatanegala Okkoota", comprising a few factions of "Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KRV)", is being backed by Ola-Uber cab drivers' association, a few auto unions, associations of farmers, street vendors, trade unions and transporters.

"We have told our drivers to stop services till evening. More than 70,000 vehicles usually run, but we are stopping the service today. We are supporting the bandh," Tanveer, President of Ola, Uber Drivers’ and Owners’ Association, Bengaluru, was quoted by news agency ANI.

A mega rally will be taken out from Anekal Toll Gate to the Chief Minister's residence following which a memorandum will be submitted to Yediyurappa demanding implementation of the report, PTI reported.

Meanwhile, reports of violence came from Mangaluru where stones were pelted on a bus in Farangipet.

Pro-Kannada activist Praveen Shetty has also been kept under house arrest.

Reacting to the bandh call, Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa appealed to the organisations to not cause any inconvenience to the public.

The government informed that the bus services will operate as usual, schools and colleges will remain open.

Notably, the police have said that permission has not been given to take out any rally, and warned of action against persons disrupting public life.

In the wake of the bandh, Bangalore University has postponed all the post-graduate examinations scheduled for Thursday.
