Union Minister Kapil Sibal on Tuesday agreed with the Supreme Court's judgement to give the 'third gender' tag to the transgender community.

"We agree with the Supreme Court order, and therefore, giving the transgenders the tag of being economically backward was right to get all the social and economic rights. They have faced a lot of discrimination. I personally have fought for their rights. I believe that whichever government comes to power must look into the kind of mistreatment meted out to the transgender community," Sibal said.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday in a landmark judgement recognised the transgenders as third gender in this country. This decision of the apex court makes India to become the first country to give transgenders the third category of sex.
