Result Update:
Final result: Kanthi Lok Sabha in West Bengal saw TMC's Sisir Adhikari winning against Debashish Samanta by 111668 votes. It was far lesser than 2.29 lakh margin he had in 2014.
Constituency profile of Kanthi LS:
Kanthi Lok Sabha constituency previously known as Contai Lok Sabha constituency is in East Midnapore district, which is the political fiefdom of the Adhikari family. Veteran Sisir Adhikari is two-time- MP from Kanthi and is contesting again. His older son Suvendu Adhikari is the all-powerful leader in the district and his younger son is an MP and candidate from Tamluk, another Lok Sabha seat in this district. In the past TMC has won Kanthi thrice, CPI(M) six times, Congress in three occasions and Praja Socialist Party won three times. Sudhir Kumar Giri won the seat five times in a row except one defeat in 1984. Samar Guha won thrice between 1967-77.
PM Modi in campaign trail alleged that there is huge corruption and tola (Commission) taken for work in the Haldia-Kanthi region, and said TMC has placed TTT, i..e Trinamool Tolabaji (extortion) Tax. TMC has taken strong exception to PM Modi's comments with Suvendu Adhikari questioning the funding of BJP's local party office. However, East Midnapore may be one of the rare places in the country, where a party has a greater war chest than BJP to fight an election.
BJP has fielded eminent doctor Debasish Samanta as their candidate. CPI(M) has fielded young turk former student leader Paritosh Pattyanayak. Paritosh is looking to highlight several unfulfilled promises of Sisir Adhikary. BJP is looking to latch onto the political vacuum in opposition space after the steady decline of Left and Congress in Bengal politics. Congress candidate from Kanthi is Dipak Das. Kanthi is one of the seats which embraced TMC very early in their political journey with Nitish Sengupta winning way back in 1999. Hence Mamata Banerjee has strived lot for the betterment of this constituency and her dream Mandarmani maritime road linking it to Digha is close to completion. Yet, TMC and former Union Minister Adhikai will be wary of surging BJP strength here. Kanthi has a significant Muslim population and their vote may prove crucial in the final equation.
Kanthi voted on May 12. The assembly segments under Kanthi are Chandipur, Patashpur, Kanthi Uttar, Bhagabanpur, Khejuri, Kanthi Dakshin and Ramnagar . TMC has its noses ahead but BJP with the powerful campaign by PM Modi is still in with a sniff to stage an upset.
