NEW DELHI: Former Chief Justice of India Justice P N Bhagwati has been re-elected to the United Nations Human Rights Committee for the fourth time.

 

Bhagwati reportedly scored the second highest number of votes in a well-contested election in which 24 candidates fought for nine positions.

 

The distinguished jurist has been in the past elected as Chairman of the Committee for two terms from 1993 to 2000 besides having been its Vice-Chairman. He has carried out several missions for the United Nations Centre for Human Rights, the Common Wealth Secretariat and the International Commission of Jurists in many countries.

 

He has also been a member of the Committee of Experts of the International Labour Organisation for over 27 years and his services have been utilized in several countries including Mongolia, Cambodia, Nepal and South Africa.
