John Kerry meets Manmohan Singh in Delhi

Visiting US Secretary of State John Kerry met Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh here on Monday evening.

Kerry and Dr. Singh are said to have discussed issues of mutual interest.

Earlier in the day, Kerry co-chaired the fourth India-US Strategic Dialogue along with External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid.

Kerry, who addressed a joint press conference with Khurshid after the fourth India-U.S. Strategic Dialogue, said that the U.S. sees cuts in India's Iran oil imports as 'important step', which would reduce its dependency on Iranian oil.

"We are appreciative that India has worked hard to reduce its dependency on Iranian oil and that has been an important step and India has been very cooperative in communicating with Iran and standing up publicly and holding them accountable for non-proliferation requirements," he said.

Kerry also said he hoped New Delhi would urge the Iranians "not to miscalculate about American and international commitment" to stopping Iran from pursuing nuclear weapons.

The U.S. Secretary of State arrived in New Delhi last evening along with a high-level delegation on a three-day visit to India.

The delegation includes US Energy Secretary, NASA Director, US Military Chief for the Pacific Region and top officials from the State Department and Home- Land Security.

This is Kerry's first visit to India after his appointment as the US Secretary of State

The strategic dialogue is one of the premier mechanisms in the dialogue architecture between India and the United States.
