Patiala House Row: Media attacked by lawyers, Kanhaiya Kumar remanded to two days police custody

A scuffle broke out at the Patiala House court during the hearing of Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union president Kanhaiya Kumar, who was arrested on Friday on charges of sedition. Students, who have been demanding Kumar’s release, alleged that they were roughed up by a group of lawyers when they entered the court premises. During the scuffle, three journalists were also attacked by some lawyers. "I am not even a JNU student. We are peacefully waiting for him. Some 6-7 lawyers, started pointing towards us and then they abused and called us Pakistanis," said one of the eye-witnesses.

"The lawyers thrashed a journalist. I saw them beating him up brutally. They were saying that it is not the court, but they who will decide the matter,’ said another person present at the court. The students have been protesting inside JNU over the arrest of Kanhaiya Kumar after an event on campus protesting the hanging of 2001 Parliament attack accused Afzal Guru.

17:45: Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi promised action against those involved in the attack on mediapersons in Patiala House court during the proceedings connected with the sedition case against JNU student leader Kanhaiya Kumar. "Law will take its course. Action will be taken in accordance with law against anybody who takes the law in their hands. I will speak to Delhi Police Commissioner," he told reporters.

He was answering questions on the alleged beating up of journalists and students and teachers of JNU in the court. On his part, Commissioner B S Bassi described the incidents in the court complex as a scuffle and no major injuries have been reported. He said mediapersons were roughed up and added that police will look into complaints relating to the incident and take action.
"Certain excesses have been committed by both sides," Bassi said.​

16: 40 Our reporter Azaan Javaid said that the mob grabbed him, pulled his hair, called him a terrorist and he barely managed to escape. Even female journalists were abused and a few media persons were forced to hide. 

16:25  Sharma defended his stance saying: "We will beat those who will chant anti-India slogans". When asked if they had taken the onus of patriotism, he replied in affirmation."Even though he was seen beating an unidentified man, he said. "We were trying to catch hold of the one who was raising pro-Pakistan slogans. We were not beating them."

According to ANI, the man beaten up by BJP MLA OP Sharma and his supporters has been identified as Ameeque Jamai of the CPI. BJP MLA OP Sharma was also seen on camera beating up an unidentified man outside Delhi’s Patiala High Court. When asked, he said: “Jo Pakistan zindabad ke naare lagaayega usko maarenge."

As large crowds gathered at the Patiala house court in Delhi where JNU student leader Kanhaiya Kumar is to be produced after three days of police custody, a major scuffle broke out. A mob which included lawyers, attacked students and the media, beating them up and shouting slogans. "Tum  desh   drohi  ho ( you are traitors)" were among some of the slogans that were being chanted by the mob before journalists and students were heckled and beaten up. According to dna reporter Azaan Javaid who was at the spot, at least  three journalists were attacked inside the court premises. 

Reporters who were covering the event were called "anti-national" and "terrorists" by lawyers, he said. They also tried to snatch his phone when he tried to clicked pictures. Several reporters including Indian Express reporter Alok Singh and IANS reporter Amiya Kushwaha, he said. 

The ordeal continued outside the Patiala house court as people were ordered to empty the courtroom. The mob of unknown persons then marched out raising slogans of "Bharat Mata ki jai - Vande Mataram" and chasing after journalists and JNU students and Kumar's sympathisers in an attempt to shoo them off the premises

About 40 police men who were deployed at the location, however, were unable to control the situation. When asked, one replied " What can the police do? "..

JNU Students' President, Kanhaiya Kumar, who was sent to three-days police custody, will be produced in court today.
