A day after Army Chief General Bipin Rawat said that Pakistan was resorting to ceasefire violations to aid infiltration, troops foiled a major infiltration bid and killed five terrorists along the Line of Control (LoC) in Tangdhar sector of Kupwara district on Saturday.
The incident took place early in the morning when troops guarding the LoC noticed some suspicious movement and immediately cordoned off the area. In the heavy barrage of firing that followed, five terrorists were killed.
"An infiltration bid has been foiled in the Tangdhar sector. Four terrorists were killed while attempting to infiltrate early morning today. One more terrorist was eliminated later. Total five terrorists have been killed. The operation is still in progress," said Colonel Rajesh Kalia, Defence spokesman in Srinagar.
This is the second time in the last eight days that security forces have eliminated infiltrators on the LoC. On May 18, forces killed four terrorists in a gun battle shortly after they infiltrated near the LoC in north Kashmir's Kupwara district. Saturday's attempt came 24 hours after General Rawat asked Pakistan to shut terror training camps and stop infiltration.
"Pakistan is continuously violating ceasefire, causing damage to life and property. When such things happen, we can't remain silent. If Pakistan wants peace, they should take initiatives to stop terrorists who infiltrate to vitiate the atmosphere," Rawat had said.
The army chief had also noted that ceasefire violations are being carried out by Pakistan to facilitate infiltration. "We want peace on the borders. It is necessary that training camps should be shut. If it happens, peace will return to border," he said.
Meanwhile, police have arrested two terrorists — Basit Ahmad Malik and Adil Qayoom Najar — for carrying out two grenade explosions at Chattabal in Srinagar.
"During their interrogation, the two disclosed they, along with another accomplice Adil Qayoom Najar, had lobbed grenades at two different occasions in Chattabal," said a police spokesperson.
