Police arrested three persons and recovered one kilogram of heroin and Rs 13 lakh cash when they intercepted a car at Valmiki Chowk in Jammu city on Friday.
Narco-terrorism is the latest challenge facing security forces in the restive Jammu and Kashmir.
Police arrested three persons and recovered one kilogram of heroin and Rs 13 lakh cash when they intercepted a car at Valmiki Chowk in Jammu city on Friday. The arrested persons were identified as Ali Mohammad alias Ishaq, a surrendered militant from Kupwara, Pradeep Kumar of Rajasthan and Suhail Ahmad Halwai of Bijbihara in south Kashmir's Anantnag district.
"On the naka, we noticed a suspicious movement when a car was trying to take a turn. We stopped the vehicle and during the search, found Rs 13 lakh cash and one kilogram of heroin. We have arrested three people including a surrendered militant. We have registered a case and further investigation is on," said Suniyya Wani, sub divisional police officer (SDPO), Jammu South.
Police is probing all angles, including that of narco terrorism perpetuating from Pakistan. Sources said police is trying to trace the origin of the drug haul to come at a definite conclusion about the motive. Sources said one of the accused, Ali, has in the past been found to be involved in drug smuggling.
Police sources said that the modus operandi of the drug trade involves the smuggling of the consignment from the other side of the border and its dumping in J&K before it is shipped to different states. The money realised from the trade is being used to fund militancy in J&K, sources said
"This is hybrid war, which Pakistan has unleashed. They are funding terrorism by drug trade. In fact they have devised a drug trafficking model to fund terrorism. We are prepared and we have a huge cache of drugs. Most of the modules have been smashed. We are in touch with Punjab and Kashmir police," said a senior police officer.
Earlier in August , Jammu and Kashmir police busted a major drug cartel and seized 51 kilogram of high grade Afghanistan-version heroin, valuing Rs 250 crore in the international market, in Jammu city. Police did not rule out the narco-terror angle into the discovery of the cache.
