J&K Delimitation process will begin after communication from MHA: EC

The meeting is taking place just a week after Parliament revoked Article 370 that gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir and enacted the law that bifurcates the state into two Union Territories -- Jammu and Kashmir with Assembly and Ladakh without it.

The Election Commission is having consultations on different aspects of delimitation of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) assembly after the bifurcation of the state into two Union Territories, in Delhi today.

The commission will discuss on the delimitation exercise which will be carried out in the state after the bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories — J&K as one UT (with legislature) and Ladakh (without legislature) as another UT. 

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), two deputy CEC and other senior members of the commission are present in the meeting.

Reacting, the Election Commission of India said to DNA in a statement: “We will begin the process of delimitation accordingly after receiving due formal communication from MHA.”

 

The meeting is taking place just a week after Parliament revoked Article 370 that gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir and enacted the law that bifurcates the state into two Union Territories -- Jammu and Kashmir with Assembly and Ladakh without it.

Earlier on Sunday, Home Minister Amit Shah said he firmly believed that Article 370 has never helped the country of Jammu and Kashmir and should have been removed long ago.

"As a Home Minister, there was no confusion in my mind about the consequences of removing Article 370. I am confident terrorism in Kashmir will finish and it will move ahead on the path of development now", Shah had mentioned. 

Meanwhile, National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval who has been on ground zero since last few days, taking stock of the prevailing situation in Jammu and Kashmir.

During the meeting, Governor Malik and NSA Doval emphasised on the importance of reaching out to people and helping them meet their daily needs besides ensuring their safety and security.

They also expressed satisfaction regarding the overall situation which is by and large peaceful.
