Ten days ahead of the first phase of civic polls in Jammu and Kashmir, six people including three terrorists and a soldier and two civilians were killed in three separate incidents at three different places on Thursday.

Two Hizbul Mujahideen terrorists, including a Special Police Officer (SPO)-turned-jihadi, were killed when security forces launched an operation in a mosque at Panzan area in central Kashmir's Budgam district as the terrorists refused to surrender and opened fire on the forces. A security force jawan was injured in the incident.

Police identified the slain terrorists as Sheeraz Ahmad Bhat and Irfan Ahmad Dar. Irfan Ahmad Dar was working as SPO before he deserted the force and joined Hizbul Mujahideen.

Colonel Rajesh Kalia said that keeping in mind the sanctity of the place and religious sentiments of the people, troops cordoned the area and all opportunities were given to the terrorists to not vilify the place of worship and surrender. "However, the terrorists chose to engage the troops and brought down heavy volume of fire from inside," he said.

In a separate incident, a top Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) terrorist and soldier were killed in an encounter in Anantnag district. Police said security forces launched the operation at Gazi Gund Dooru in the wee hours of Thursday acting on specific inputs.

"An encounter broke out between security forces and terrorists wherein a local terrorist identified as Asif Malik who was operating as LeT commander was eliminated. He was involved in several attacks on security forces including the killing of CRPF men at Achabal this year and in many other cases of civilian atrocities. One army jawan identified as Happy Singh of 19 Rashtriya Riffles also attained martyrdom in the encounter," said a police spokesman.

In a separate incident, a civilian was killed in Old Srinagar when security forces launched a cordon and search operation in Noorbagh area. "Security Forces acting on a credible input cordoned a cluster of houses where the hiding terrorists fired indiscriminately resulting in death of an individual identified as Saleem Malik," said a police spokesman.

Another unidentified man was killed in Kupwara when security forces laid an ambush in Rangwar area in Kupwara.

Tension gripped the parts of Kashmir valley with authorities snapping the mobile internet in three districts of Srinagar, Budgam and Anantnag.
