A 16-year-old gang rape survivor in Jharkhand's Chanho village has been forced to live in isolation. The villagers have been treating her as an "untouchable" and are refusing to socialise with her or her two-year-old daughter.

According to a source, "The girl was raped by five boys of her village in 2015 when she was only 13. She did not inform her family about her ordeal until she was six months pregnant. She gave birth to a baby girl in 2014, unaware that it would unleash another saga of woes for her."

The victim, who is an orphan and lives with the in-laws of her elder sister, had to quit her studies midway as the villagers did not want her to mingle with the other kids at the local school. "She mostly remains indoors because her tormentors, all juveniles who are now free, threaten to kill her. She is also abused by the villagers and they even wash the hand pump if she takes water from it for household chores, leaving her feeling dejected," the girl's sister said.

Another family member said the locals refuse to buy anything from a small shop they run for sustenance. "Even though she has a two-year-old daughter, the victim herself is a child. She is left with no means to fend for herself or her child. The government had ordered for monetary compensation to her, but no money has been received yet. Her daughter was even refused vaccination because the name of the father was not known. We want to shift her to some place where she will not be reminded of her traumatic past on a daily basis," a family member said.

Following media outcry over the incident, the local police and administration reached Chanho village, around 60 km from Ranchi, to probe the incident. "We have talked to the locals and are trying to identify those who boycotted her. Action will be taken against them. They have been instructed not to repeat such behaviour in future," said Chanho inspector RK Singh.
