Amid row over cow vigilantism, a man was beaten up in Jharkhand after a dead cow was reportedly found outside his house on Tuesday.
The incident took place in Beria Hatiatand village in Deori area of Giridih district, nearly 200 km from Ranchi.
A mob also set the house of Usman Ansari on fire after they spotted the carcass of a cow. The victim has been injured and undergoing treatment, however, his condition is stable.
The mob also pelted stones in which about 50 policemen were also injured, reported Indian Express.
“Our men and officials braved the crowd and immediately rescued Ansari and his family members. We had to open fire in the air,” said Jharkhand police spokesperson and ADG (Operations) R K Mullik.
One person, identified as Krishna Pandit, was also injured when the police fired several rounds in the air. Over 200 security personnel have been deployed in the area.
Last year, cracking the whip on cow vigilantism, the Centre had asked all states not to tolerate anyone taking law into their hands in the name of protecting cow and take prompt action against such offenders.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had denounced cow vigilantes and asked people to beware of its 'fake' protectors trying to divide society and the country and asked the states to severely punish them.
