Jhanjharpur Lok Sabha constituency is one of the 40 parliamentary constituencies in Bihar and will go to polls in the third phase of the general elections on April 23. Jhanjharpur parliamentary constituency is part of Madhubani district of Bihar. 

The sitting MP of Jhanjharpur Lok Sabha seat is BJP's Birendra Kumar Chaudhary who won by defeating RJD's Mangani Lal Mandal with a margin of over 55,000 votes. Mandal was earlier in the Janata Dal (United) and had won the seat in 2009 polls. He, however, switched parties and contested on an RJD ticket in 2014. 

In 2009, he had defeated veteran RJD leader Devendra Prasad Yadav. Yadav later left the RJD and is now Samajwadi Party's Bihar president. Yadav represented Jhanjharpur from 1989 to 1998 and from 1999 to 2009.

In 2019 Lok Sabha election, the seat has gone to the JD(U) as per the NDA's seat-sharing agreement and the BJP was forced to drop its sitting MP. The JD(U) has fielded Ram Preet Mandal from who will face Mahagathbandhan candidate Gulab Yadav who is contesting on an RJD ticket. 

Besides these two main rivals, there are other 15 candidates in the fray. 

The Jhanjharpur Lok Sabha constituency is made up of six Assembly constituencies -  Khajauli, Babubarhi, Rajnagar, Jhanjharpur, Phulparas and Laukaha.

While Janata Dal (United) is part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) which comprises of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), the Bihar Mahagathbandhan comprises Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Congress, Rashtriya Lok Samta Party (RLSP), Hindustan Awam Morcha (HAM) and Vikasshil Insan Party (VIP).

The Congress got nine constituencies as per the seat-sharing arrangements, while the RJD has 20 out of which it has forgone Ara in favour of the CPI(ML), which has returned the favour by announcing that the ultra-Left outfit would not field its candidate from Pataliputra, which would be contested by Lalu Prasad's eldest daughter Misa Bharti. 

Besides, Upendra Kushwaha's RLSP is contesting five seats and Jitan Ram Manjhis HAM is fighting three. The VIP, founded and headed by Bollywood set designer-turned-politician Mukesh Sahni, has got three seats out of the 40 in Bihar.

The polling on this seat will be held in the third phase of Lok Sabha elections on April 23. Five constituencies of Bihar's 40 Lok Sabha seats - Jhanjharpur, Supaul, Araria, Madhepura and Khagaria - will go to polls in the third phase. A total of 82 candidates are in the fray in the five constituencies that would go to polls.

The results of the  Lok Sabha election 2019 will be declared on May 23.
