Impressed with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Jan Dhan Yojana', the youth of rural and backward areas in Kathua is now opening their bank accounts zealously.
The youth here is becoming the ambassador of this 'Yojana' as they lead in educating the illiterate people of backward areas and those who are unaware of banking facilities.
"As many as 18,000 bank accounts have been opened so far and nearly 3,000 applicant forms have been filled for account opening," said Vijay Padha, the Lead District Manager (LDM) of State Bank of India (Lead Bank) RSETI, Kathua.
He confirmed that so far 120 awareness camps have been arranged in the remote and unbanked areas to cover up the left out population, not only by us but by the bank members as well.
"Awareness cum account opening camp was also organized by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) and J-K Gramin Bank at the government higher secondary school at Kowag, Billawer, under the Jan Dhan Yogana scheme," he added.
"Around 100 student accounts were opened on the spot and nearly 100 students filled up their account opening form on the spot. The student were distributed the Passbook of bank account by J-K Gramin Bank of Mandali, Billawer," said the manager.
The nationwide launch of 'Pardhan Mantri Jan-Dhan Yojna' scheme was also held in Kathua where District Development Commissioner of Kathua, Dr. Shahid Iqbal Chaudhary, IAS, launched the scheme in an impressive function organised by the State Bank of India at Kathua last month.
The 'Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana' is an ambitious scheme, under which the government would provide every household with a bank account and an insurance cover.
Under the banking scheme, account holders would get a debit card and accident insurance cover of up to 100,000 rupees. They would also get an overdraft facility of up to 5,000 Indian rupees.
The first phase of the mission that started last month would end in August next year.
The second phase will start from 2015 till 2018, covering the aspects such as micro insurance and pension schemes like 'Swavalamban'.
