The 12-year-old girl, who studies in Class V at a government residential school for the deaf and dumb, prematurely delivered the baby boy in an ambulance before reaching the hospital on Saturday night.

"A committee comprising representatives of district administration, social justice, police and NGOs was formed to probe the matter. The committee communicated with the girl who told that she had an affair with a boy in her village," Banswara Collector K B Gupta said today.

"She went to her father's place (village) in Gadhi tehsil in April 2013 after her examinations and returned to the school in July. It is opined by the doctors that she conceived in that period only (during her stay in village)," he said.

"The girl has expressed that she is not willing to live with the newborn, so the baby will now be handed over to children's shelter home through the District Child Welfare Committee," he said.

"Police officers have been asked to carry out further course of investigation," the Collector added.
