Jaguar crashes in Jaisalmer, pilot dies

JAIPUR: An Air Force pilot was on Thursday killed when a Jaguar fighter aircraft crashed in Jaisalmer district, a police official said.
 
The aircraft was airborne from the Nal airbase near Bikaner at 4.40 pm on a firing exercise mission and crashed at Pokharan range minutes later, according to an Air Force spokesman.
 
A court of inquiry has been ordered to find out the cause of the accident.
 
The debris of the fighter plane was spread over large sections of sand dunes between Delasar and Dhaysar villages, about 55 km from Jaisalmer, the police said.
 
Flying Lieutenant Renold Kevin Sheraro's body has been located, he said.
 
A senior IAF officer reached the spot of the accident to inquire into the reasons behind the crash.
 
The area was cordoned and villagers were asked to stay away from the crash site.
 
There were no casualties on the ground.   
 
Thursday's crash is the second since November last year, when a Russian-built MiG-23 crashed in Gujarat.
 
The Indian Air Force's ageing fleet has been plagued by crashes, particularly involving the Russian-made MiGs.

Thirteen Air Force planes have crashed in the last two years, including two Jaguars, killing 10 pilots.
 
The deep-penetration Jaguar aircraft were inducted in the late 1970s and had recently undergone a major upgradation of engines, radars and avionics. Besides, the Air Force, the planes are being used to carry out maritime operations.
