On Saturday, more than 50 thousand people joined in a rally in Kolkata to protest against police inaction in Jadavpur University. Now the student wing of Trinamool Congress has decided to do a counter rally and will go to Raj Bhawan to meet governor Keshri Nath Tripathi and brief him on the situation.
Shankudeb Panda, the president of TMCP (Trinamool Congress Chatra Parishad), has called the currently situation at Jadavpur University an anarchy. In a series of Facebook posts, Panda has called for normal functioning at the University. He has claimed that the violent protests of the JU students is a bid to bring back the heady days of 1970's days when campus violence disrupted education in colleges. He also suggested that protesters were being influenced by Naxalites, like in the 70's.
Students affiliated to the Trinamool Congress have decided to start the rally from just outside the Jadavpur University. However they will not be using the political banner to give an apolitical feel to the entire protest rally.
The ruling party is under considerable pressure after massive ourburst of public outrage against the police. On September 17, police entered the JU campus and beat up protesing students and allegedly even molested girls. Goons belonging to TMC were also present during police action according to complaints made by protesting students. Monday's rally is looking to counter the prevailing mood in the city by showing that TMC still enjoys confidence of youth.
The protest by Jadavpur University students had included thousands of men and women from all walks of life. Their demand was an impartial probe into the police lathicharge on students of Jadavpur University (JU) as well as resignation of the varsity's vice-chancellor Abhijit Chakrabarti.
