Result update:

Jadavpur constituency of West Bengal voted in the last phase on 19th May. Sporadic violence was reported from parts of the constituency during voting.

Here is the results

Final result: MimI Chakraborty won by 295239 votes against BJP's Anupam Hazra. Ex-Kolkata mayor Bikash Bhattacharya came third.

Constituency profile:

Somnath Chatterjee, Mamata Banerjee, Krishna Bose, Sugata Bose, Kabir Suman- these are some of the doyen of Bengal's political and cultural club-and they are also the former MPs from Jadavpur Lok Sabha constituency. Will popular Bengali actress and TMC actress Mimi Chakraborty join this illustrious club or will it be former Kolkata Mayor Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya? Or will BJP's Anupam Hazra who till recently was with TMC have the last laugh?

18.2 lakh voters on 19th May will decide the fate of these three high profile candidates. Congress has not given any candidate and has given their support to erudite Bikash Bhattacharya. According to Mamata Banerjee, Bikash Bhattacharya 'looks like Uttam Kumar (popular bengali hero of past) but didn't perform as Kolkata mayor'.

The seven assembly segments under Jadavpur Lok Sabha are Baruipur Purba (SC), Baruipur Paschim, Sonarpur Dakshin, Bhangar,  Jadavpur, Sonarpur Uttar and Tollyganj. Except Jadavpur, all the assembly segments are with TMC. Hence on paper it is expected to be a smooth ride. Mimi's 'mentor' and state Minister Arup Biswas is handling the entire campaign for her. Post delimitation, Jadavpur is much more a rural constituency with the inclusion of Bhangar. TMC leader Arabul Islam is again prepared to give the party a huge lead from Bhangar like last time.

But there are certain factors which are keeping TMC worried. First is the profile of Bikash Bhattacharya. Bikash is a consummate lawyer-politician known for taking up serious issues. Will the politically aware middle-class Bengalis of Jadavpur, Tollyganj, Sonarpur, and Baruipur accept Mimi over the noted lawyer. CPM has a natural base owing to the settlement of a large number of people who came as refugees post-partition in Jadavpur and took Left's help in getting rehabilitated.

Hence TMC is by no means sure of a win in Jadavpur as it was seen in Jadavpur assembly too where Sujan Chakraborty got better of minister Manish Gupta. In Bhangar, where there was a massive protest against land acquisition, the CPI(Ml) Red Stars are fully backing Bikash Bhattacharya. So TMC's strategy of getting a massive lead from Bhangar has that big 'if'. Still TMC has the better ground game and is expected to prevail.

Also in fray, is BJP's Anupam Hazra. Anupam created a stir by meeting his fomer party member Anubrata Mondal in the campaign trail. Many believe that dented his credibility as a serious candidate. Anupam is also largely seen as an outsider as he is from Bolpur. In the last week, the fiasco regarding the destruction of Vidyasagar's statue is also likely to be a factor among the undecided voters who make a call at the last moment.

Jadavpur has seen see-saw fortunes of star contestants in the recent elections. In 2014, Sugata Bose defeated Sujan Chakraborty by 1.25 lakh votes. In 2009, Kabir Suman defeated Sujan Chakraborty by 56 thousand votes. In 2004, though Sujan Chakraborty won defeating Krishna Bose by 90 thousand votes. Overall, CPI(M) has won five times, TMC four times and Congress twice. It kickstarted Mamata Banerjee's political career, when a then young politcal activist slayed Somnath Chatterjee in 1984. However Mamata lost to Malini Bhattacharya in 1989.

Many intellectuals and even some who had supported 'Paribartan' have supported Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya. The Left believes an upset win in Jadavpur is just the right tonic it needs to recharge the fledgling organisation across the state. TMC though hopes that Didi's work and Mimi's charisma will do the trick for them.
