Deputy superintendent of police Tarun Barot and IPS officer GL Singhal probably heaved a sigh of relief after they were allowed to go following an intense grilling session that lasted for over four hours with the members and chairman of Ishrat-SIT on Wednesday.

It is to be noted that the two officers failed to make an appearance when the earlier probe body had summoned them for hearing. This is the first time that both the police officers remained present before the SIT in regard to the fake encounter case.

Barot reached the Ishrat-SIT office at around 11.45am on Wednesday, while Singhal followed him and reached at 12pm. All the three IPS officers, Satyapal Singh, Satish Verma and Mohan Jha questioned the two officers till 350pm. Later, they were allowed to go back.

Barot is currently posted at Mehsana, while Singhal is posted as the district superintendent of police, Anand. Both of them are key accused in the Ishrat Jahan case and have been named along with suspended IPS officer DG Vanzara of allegedly killing Ishrat and others in a fake encounter.

The team recorded their statements in connection to the witnesses and the evidences collected against them by IPS officer Verma. The chairman of Ishrat-SIT, Satyapal Singh, meanwhile told media that the team is all set to submit its report in the Gujarat High Court before the hearing on June 25, 2011. He, however, refused to spill anymore beans on the interrogation of both the officers.

However, sources familiar with the development said that now after these two cops have been questioned, there will be a series of other cops who will be cross-examined in this connection. This is the first phase of investigation, since Singh took the charge as the chairman of SIT.
