With the admission season on, the University Information Centre (UIC) is flooded with calls and e-mails from lakhs of students seeking admission to the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP).
The UIC, which functions throughout the year, receives over 3,000 calls every day during the admission time. Students from across India have been contacting the centre with their queries regarding the admission process, fees structure and courses in various colleges.
“Admission time is the busiest time for us. Every day over 3,000 students call us to clear their doubts. Many of the calls are from outstation students who cannot come to the university,” said Satish Kumar, deputy dean of UIC.
The centre has over 14 information executives, who respond to calls and e-mails from students. These executives includes staff members as well as interns from the university’s adult education department.
“The information executives are given training where they are told about the rules and regulations of the university, various courses and all the new decisions of the varsity, so that they can respond accurately to all the queries. This year the executives were given special training as FYUP is a new programme,” said Kumar.
The centre has 12 parallel lines on which students can call from Monday through Friday between 9am and 5pm. However, during admission time, the centre works on Saturday as well. The rest of the year, the centre gets around 200 calls every day. The number increases a bit during examinations and results. But, some students complained that they had to wait for hours to get through the centre’s number. And at times, they didn’t succeed at all.
