'Indradhanush 2010' - the cultural festival of SM Patel Institute of Commerce (SMPIC) began in Ahmedabad with a bang on Monday. Thousands of students marked their presence at the inauguration ceremony which featured release of 500 balloons in the air.

The five-day cultural festival will end on December 31.

Dhruvit Shah, head of the organising committee of the festival, said that this is for the first time that students initiated and will manage the festival on their own. "Every year, the professor in-charge used to handle the event. But this time, the students will single-handedly manage the event," added Dhruvit.

The college campus, on the opening day which was themed- 'Traditional Day,' was dotted with myriad colours of sarees, jewellery and boys sporting traditional kurtas. Flaunting their apparels, students gave a traditional flavour to the celebrative ambience at the campus.

Competitions such as one-minute game show, rangoli competition, mono-acting/mimicry, ad-mad show and poster making were the reflections of the inaugural day of the five-day fest.

Lively performances by participants during the mono-acting competition entertained the audience. Myriad hues and fine strokes was the highlight of the rangoli competition.

Richa Shah won the rangoli competition, while Danish Shah bagged the first prize for poster making. Isha and her group stood first in the ad mad-show.

Regarding the entries, Dhruvit said, "This is the first time that student participation in all competitions has touched 450. Till last year, there were 380 entries. But this time, we have received an overwhelming response with 450 participations."

Ashwin Purohit, in-charge principal, SMPIC, said, "We want to provide ample opportunities to the students. Through these activities, we want to mould and enhance their leadership qualities. Also, students can bring out their creativity at these competitions."

On Tuesday, the second day of the event, will have the theme of 'Group day' and the competitions will be singing, folk dance and others. "As many as eight competitions will take place on the second day making it another entertaining day," said Dhruvit.
