The Indore Municipal Corporation has redesigned the map of city wards to accommodate the area of newly included 29 villages into its limits. The civic body is in the process to publish the delimitation report containing the newly defined territory of 70 wards by January 31.

As per the instructions of the district administration, a committee was formed to delimit the new boundaries of existing 69 wards of the city to accommodate the population of the 29 villages. The committee was also asked to include area of these villages in 70 wards after it was granted permission by the state government to increase one ward.

“According to Census-2011, the city has population of around 19.95 lakh while around 2 lakh people reside in 29 villages. The committee was asked to divide the population of 21.95 lakh in 70 wards,” said IMC additional commissioner and the committee in charge, SK Kathuria.

Technically, the officials will have to accommodate population of 2 lakh people of 29 villages in the 70th city ward. As a solution to this, the officials have increased the average population of 28,000 people in the existing 69 wards to around 31,500 in the 70 wards of the city.

“Every ward will have around 32,000 residents with a variation of 10-15 per cent. The district collector Akash Tripathi had given a deadline of January 31 to submit the committee’s report for first publication,” said Kathuria.

The sources claimed that around 7 wards have gone through drastic changes in the process of delimitation.

“We are at the last stage of completing the report. The delimitation work has been completed and we hope to submit the report for publication by January 31,” he added.

After the first publication of the report in February, claims and objections will be invited and necessary changes will be made accordingly in the report before sending the same to the divisional commissioner, who would approve the report for final publication.

The final report will contain the information regarding territory, population and map of every ward redesigned in the best possible manner, the officer explained.

Kathuria claimed of putting best efforts to merge the villages in the adjoining wards with less modification of the existing wards.

Plan to develop 80 wards fails to get nod
As per the MP Municipal Corporation Act 1956, a Municipal Corporation can have maximum 70 wards. The state government has to adopt Mahanagar Palika Act, which is in practice in Mumbai, Bangalore and other metro cities, if number of wards is increased above said figure.

IMC has sent a proposal to the state govt for developing 80 wards to accommodate 9 villages but senior officials in Bhopal didn’t give a nod stating their helplessness to adopt the Mahanagar Palika Act which provides immense powers to the Municipal Commissioner.
