Indigenous minorities oppose treaties with Bangladesh

The proposed signing of accords between India and Bangladesh and India during the ongoing visit of its premier Sheikh Hasina has been opposed by Assam Sanmilita Mahasabha, which it alleged, is against the interest of the state.     The two countries should instead sign an accord on theillegal migration from Bangladesh to Assam, the Mahasabha, anumbrella organisation of indigenous minorities and tribes ofAssam, said.      Mahasabha president Motiur Rahman and general secretary Tilak Mohan told reporters here that the proposed agreement relating to India's help in the development of railways and communication sector in Bangaldesh is not conducive for the security of the region.     ''India should first take the initiative to send back the illegal immigrants from Bangladesh who have settled in Assam and then think about development in that country,'' he said.      The Mahasabha members sat on a dharna here today demanding that the two countries sign treaties related to shoot-at-sight orders along the Indo-Bangla border, construction of walls instead of wire fencing along the border and army and river patrolling in the remote areas of the international border to stop smuggling, fundamentalism and drugs movement.
