Battle-hardened Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry (JAKLI) has earned a rare honour after Indian Navy and Indian Air Force entered into a strategic affiliation with this highly decorated regiment of the Indian Army.
JAKLI will be affiliated with Indian Navy's front-line ship INS Kochi, which is the second ship of the indigenously designed and constructed Kolkata-class guided missile Destroyers built by the Mazagon Dock Ltd at Mumbai. The ship is packed with state of the art weapon systems and sensors.
JAKLI was earlier affiliated to INS Ganga which got decommissioned with honour and fanfare in March 2018. And to continue with this strong tradition of bonhomie and mutual understanding for culture and combat potential, the need was felt to identify naval combat unit.
"It is a historical day as the front-line ship of Indian Navy INS Kochi has been affiliated with Jammu and Kashmir Light infantry (JAKLI). It is for the first time that we are doing this affiliation between a naval unit and an army regiment outside naval base," said Vice-Admiral Girish Luthra, Flag Officer Commanding in Chief, Western Naval Command.
Under this programme, personnel from JAKLI will be sailing in ships and similarly personnel from INS Kochi will visit their locations.
"This is the first step. This is going to strengthen our joint venture of working together. We will have personnel from JAKLI visiting our ships and also sailing in our ships. Similarly our personnel from INS Kochi will visit their various locations including operational locations and learn about functioning of various battalions of JAKLI. This will promote better understanding and better synergy between our two services", said Vice Admiral Luthra.
Similarly, the elite 51 Squadron of Indian Air Force has also entered into an affiliation with the JAKLI. "JAKLI Regimental Centre and 51 Squadron Air Force were jointly deployed in Kashmir for rescue and flood relief operations and they together evacuated thousands of people to safety and provided them relief and assistance under Operation Megh Rahat", said Colonel Rajesh Kalia, defence spokesman at Srinagar.
Colonel Kalia said to foster greater understanding of each other's combat potential and to inculcate a greater synergy and bonhomie amongst all ranks, 51 Squadron Air Force has now been affiliated with JAKLI Regimental Training Centre.
