India's Mars Mission is on track and a successful test firing of the Mars Orbiter Spacecraft's main liquid engine on Monday afternoon proved it to the world. Former Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chief G Madhavan Nair, who had famously criticised the project before its launch last year, on Monday said that India's Mars mission will be a "major milestone" and "hoped that it would motivate the ISRO community to much bigger things in future".
"It is an important milestone … After 300 day, the engine was successfully started again today … Let's hope we are able to build on this (Mars mission) achievement. The final work (placing it in orbit) is due in next two days and I hope that this will also be done successfully" Nair told dna.
"As far as India is concerned, it is definitely a prestige project … Now we can certainly build on it. ISRO community today will be an excited lot and this achievement could motivate them to do much bigger things in future," said Nair.
Nair's words on Monday, including his praise, were certainly a toned down version of his criticism last year when Mars spacecraft was launched. Asked about it, Nair said, "there is no point talking about it now" as all the criticism was when the spacecraft had not been launched.
The former ISRO chairman, however, had a word of caution for Indian scientific community.
"We cannot be overplaying this achievement …. We cannot be overstating this achievement … we cannot do it especially considering our neighbour China is far more advanced (in space technology)," Nair added.
Last year, in November, Nair had made his dissatisfaction with Mars mission public. That time he clearly stated that he was dissatisfied because compromises were made and a minuscule set of instruments were carried in the Mars orbiter leaving out some vital instruments.
He had alleged that India could have done much better with the Rs 460 crore spent on Mars Mission rather than just demonstrating that we have also gone to Mars.
