In manifesto for Telangana, Congress promises big push for education, farm loan waivers

The party promised that it would allocate 20 percent of the state budget towards education development.

Farmer welfare, health and housing were key push areas in the manifesto that the Congress released on Tuesday for the 2018 Telangana Assembly elections on Tuesday. The party also promised to increase reservation for Dalits if it is voted to power in the December 7 polls.

The manifesto was released in Hyderabad by state Congress chief Nalamada Uttam Kumar Reddy, the party high command in-charge for the state, RC Khuntia and former Union Minister Jairam Ramesh.

Among the key planks that the party pushed were promises of farm loan waivers of up to Rs 2 lakh each for farmers, the recruitment of 20,000 teachers and allocation of up to 20 percent of the state budget towards education development. 

The party also made key announcement aimed at BPL families, including a health scheme of up to Rs 5 lakh and grants of up to Rs 5 lakh for the construction of houses.

The Congress also sought to woo particular communities with a number of schemes and moves aimed at the. Among other things, the party promised to raise reservation for Dalits. It also promised to create a budgetary sub-plan for minorities and Backward Communities.

The party also promised loan waivers to government-affiliated women's organisations.

The Congress is looking to overturn the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) in the state's second Assembly election. It has formed an alliance with the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Telangana Jana Samithi (TJS) and the CPI, which is being called 'Mahakutami', or Grand Alliance. The alliance had on Monday released a common agenda for governance.

Of the 119 seats, Congress is contesting in 93, TDP in 14, TJS in 8 and CPI in 3 seats.

Telangana votes on December 7 in a single phase of polling. The counting of votes is scheduled for December 11, along with the four other states that have seen Assembly elections in this round of election fever.
