The attrition in West Bengal Congress party continues as three more MLAs are all set to join the ruling Trinamool Congress. On Monday, at an event at Behrampore in Murshidabad district, state transport minister and TMC observer for the district Suvendu Adhikary said that on July 21 at the Martyrs’ Day function in Kolkata, many, other than the three MLAs of Congress will officially join TMC.
The function was put up on Monday at Behrampore’s Rabindra Sadan for the formal joining of former district Congress president Abu Taher after he was ousted from Congress but sources said that upon the instruction of the party high command, announcement of Taher’s defection had been called off and the event was renamed into a preparation of July 21 function.
“Many have contacted me for joining TMC. From Murshidabad district itself there are three heavyweight leaders who have expressed their willingness to defect to TMC. I have kept the party high command including the secretary general informed about it. They are the ones who would take a call about it,” Adhikary said.
Without naming state Congress president and party MP from Murshidabad Adhir Chowdhury, Adhikary, referring to the Congress’ electoral understanding with the Left Front, said that that Murshidabad district leadership had hijacked Congress and converted it into Marxist Congress party which has led to the loss in credibility of the party among people and leaders alike.
Murshidabad, which had historically been a Congress stronghold and Chowdhury had managed to hold fort even during the Left Front rule, has, during the TMC reign seen Congress leaders parading to TMC.
On the other hand, talking about former minister of the TMC government, Humayun Kabir who had recently joined BJP, Adhikary said that he needed mental treatment.
