The government is planning to discourage the imports of foreign liquor, along with nine other items, in line with a Prime Minister Office diktat on imports.
On the eve of the launch of the 'Make in India' campaign, the PMO asked the ministry of commerce to reduce the dependence on imports.
The ministry identified nine commodities on which the import bill is of $100 million each annually. Alcoholic beverages are one of them. A ministry official told dna, "The ministry will take up the matter with the finance ministry soon. As liquor and certain other items are not government imports, they will have to be discouraged by hiking import duty. The finance ministry will take the final call. A rise in duty will impact prices." Customs duty on alcoholic products is 150% now.
The other items are edible oils, cocoa products, fruits, processed items, sugar and cashew. The commerce ministry will also invite suggestions from the industry on how to curtail imports of these items.
