A professor of Oceanology department of the premiere institution, 40-year-old Joydeep Bhattacharya, fell into an abandoned quarry while trying to take a selfie with his four-year-old son Udan, at Gholgoria, near the institute.

District police superintendent Bharati Ghosh said that Bhattacharya had died of his own carelessness. “He had become a little careless and slipped and fell into the quarry along with his son. Although his son could be rescued, Bhattacharya died,” Ghosh said.

A resident of Asansol, Bhattacharya had joined IIT Kharagpur in 2013. He had purchased a house at Gholgoria where he had come on Sunday with his son and two-year-old daughter Sirin. Eye-witnesses said that after they rushed to the spot on hearing the sound of the professor falling, they could only see his son who they rescued but Bhattacharya had drowned and could not be found. Police was informed and after Bhattacharya’s body was fished out it was taken to Kharagpur Hospital where he was declared brought dead.
