India's decision to join the dialogue process with the Taliban has reignited the demands for talks with the 'non-mainstream' parties in Kashmir.

Leading the charge is former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah who questioned New Delhi that if they can participate at a non-official level in the Moscow format meeting on Afghanistan, why can't it hold a dialogue with 'non-mainstream stakeholders' in Jammu and Kashmir.

"If 'non-official' participation in a dialogue that includes the Taliban is acceptable to the Modi government why not a 'non-official' dialogue with non-mainstream stakeholders in J&K? Why not a "non-official" dialogue centered around J&K's eroded autonomy & its restoration?" he tweeted.

Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday confirmed the participation in the dialogue in Russia saying it will be on a non-official level.

"Our participation at the meeting will be at the non-official level. India supports all efforts at peace and reconciliation in Afghanistan that will preserve unity and plurality, and bring security, stability, and prosperity to the country. India's consistent policy has been that such efforts should be Afghan-led, Afghan-owned, and Afghan-controlled and with the participation of the Government of Afghanistan," the MEA said.

Omar's statement comes a day after his father and National Conference president Farooq Abdullah, in which he calls for "Ireland-type settlement for Kashmir issue", evoking a sharp reaction from hardline separatist groups.

"Kashmiris have not sacrificed tens of thousands of lives for a so-called fragile, absurd and ridiculous road maps like autonomy, self-rule, four-point formula, status quo or soft borders for resolving Kashmir. The Kashmir issue could only be resolved through implementation of the UN Resolutions suggesting plebiscite," said Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai, chairman, Tehreek-e-Hurriyat Jammu and Kashmir.
