“Maine to Papa se kaha tha pass karwa dijiye, unhone ne to top hi karwa diya” or in English, “I had only told my dad to get me passed but he went ahead and made me the topper.”, The Indian Express reported Ruby Rai as saying. This admission from Bihar’s class 12 arts topper Ruby Rai perfectly sums up the current mess she’s in as the girl who wrote ‘Tuslidas, Pranam” about the poet instead of an essay in the re-test.

Manu Maharaj, Patna special SP, told the newspaper that Rai was forthright in accepting she didn’t deserve to be a topper and had expected second division at best and now blamed her parents and her college principal Bachcha Rai for making her a topper.

The police however aren’t convinced about her ignorance of the scam as she had written fresh answers in a tampered version of the answer sheet. There’s also some controversy over her age as she might be a minor. The SSP added that there was enough proof of tampering and that the answers were written in fresh sheets, and one of the toppers had been awarded 51 out of 50 marks.

Rai, who had achieved infamy after describing political science as "prodigal science" soon after the declaration of the Class XII results, was asked about a dozen questions from the syllabus by a seven-member expert committee of the board. Re-exams were ordered after she in a TV interview had said political science, a subject she virtually aced, teaches cooking. Last week, a Patna court rejected the interim bail plea of BSEB ex-chairman Lalkeshwar Prasad Singh and his wife Usha Sinha, a former JD (U) MLA, in connection with the intermediate toppers' scam case.

Following the furore over the Bihar Board examination toppers being unable to answer basic questions related to their stream eventually leading to a re-examination, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had earlier said the guilty won't be spared, adding the investigation into this matter will be done with a criminal angle. The BSEB earlier on June 4 cancelled the results of two toppers, including Sourabh Shrestha, of the Intermediate (Science) examinations after they failed to prove their merit in a re-test.
