Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Friday he could never forgive Pragya Thakur for lionising Mahatma Gandhi's assassin Nathuram Godse. "The statements given about Gandhiji or Godse are very bad and are wrong for the society. Though she apologised but I will never be able to forgive her for insulting Bapu," he said in an interview to a news channel.
As controversy raged on the last day of campaigning, BJP president Amit Shah said the party has taken serious note of the statements from Pragya Thakur, Union Minister Anantkumar Hegde and the party's Karnataka MP Nalin Kumar Kateel.
Holding that the comments were against BJP's ideology, Shah asked the party's disciplinary committee to submit a report on the issue in 10 days for further action.
"They have withdrawn their statements and also apologised. However, their remarks are against the decorum of public life and the party's ideology. Taking serious note of their remarks, the party has decided to send them to the disciplinary committee," Shah tweeted.
Sadhvi Pragya, BJP's candidate from Bhopal, had stirred up a storm Thursday by saying: "Godse was, is and will remain a deshbhakt."
Congress leader Kapil Sibal had earlier in the day tweeted against PM Modi's silence on the issue. "I can only pray for my country and hope that one day the silent majority will keep violence at bay."
