How to file election nomination: List of documents a candidate must submit before the returning officer

Here is the list of all the documents which a candidate must submit before the returning officer to file election nomination failing which would cost the cancellation of their application.

Any aspiring candidate who plans to contest Lok Sabha elections (General elections) or state Assembly election must submit a set of minimum required documents to the returning at the time of filing the nomination. Below is the list of all the documents which a candidate must submit failing which would cost the cancellation of his application. 

Eligibility of the candidate

Any aspiring candidate must be a citizen of India. 

Age criteria

  • To contest Lok Sabha or Vidhan Sabha elections, a candidate must be of a minimum 25-year-old.
  • To contest Rajya Sabha election, a candidate must be at least 30 years old.
  • To be the member of the Legislative council (Vidhan Parishad) also, a candidate must be at least 30-year-old.
  • A candidate's name should be enlisted in the current electoral roll of any Parliamentary constituencies, state legislature, assembly constituencies to contest any particular type of election. 


Documents required by candidates to contest Parliament or Assembly election 

  • Nomination paper: Form 2A for Lok Sabha and Form 2B for Assembly election. 
  • Form 26: Affidavit with all the columns completely filled up including details of assets (movable, immovable and foreign assets), pending criminal cases if any, sources of income, educational qualification, liabilities. 
  • Form A and B if the candidate is being fielded by a political party.
  • If a candidate belongs to a particular caste then he/she should submit their caste certificate. 
  • Electoral roll certified extract.

Security deposit: 

  • For Lok Sabha: Rs 25,000 and Rs 12,500 for SC/ST
  • For Rajya Sabha: Rs 10,000 and Rs 5,000 for SC/ST
  • For Vidhan Sabha: Rs 10,000 and Rs 5,000 for SC/ST
  • For Vidhan Parishad: Rs 10,000 and Rs 5,000 for SC/ST

What does a nomination paper consists?

It is basically a declaration of a candidate's basic details including their photograph and name of the candidate in a relevant electoral roll. It also consists of the details of any proposers in the given constituency. 

Oath and Affirmation 

After completing all the necessary and required details, the aspiring candidate has to take an oath according to the prescribed format declared in the 3rd schedule of the constitution before the returning officer/assistant returning officer.
