The accused has been identified as Vamshi Krishna, a Hyderabad-based travel agent.

According to the police, Krishna had promised his girlfriend based in Chennai that he would take her to Mumbai for a trip. However, he was short on money and hence to avoid going to Mumbai, he tried to create an emergency situation so that all flights would be cancelled from all three airports.

"We traced him through the IP address. He used a cyber cafe to email and posed as a female so that he would not be identified. Further probe is on," said K. Kumar, Additional Commissioner of Police (crime) Hyderabad.

The alert was sounded on April 16 after an email was sent to Mumbai Police about a simultaneous hijack attempt in Mumbai, Chennai and Hyderabad. The e-mail mentioned a woman overhearing six boys discussing the plan. Security at the three international airports was put on maximum alert and was increased to the level in place on the Republic Day and Independence Day.
