Hazaribagh Lok Sabha constituency profile:

Hazaribagh Lok Sabha constituency is one of the 14 Lok Sabha seats in Jharkhand. Hazaribagh has a star candidate in Union Minister Jayant Sinha who is facing off against Congress leader Gopal Sahu and CPI's Bhubneshwar Prasad Mehta.  Sahu landed in controversy when Rs 22 lakh was seized from his hotel room leading to FIR being registered. His brother Shiv Prasad Sahu was Ranchi MP in the 1980s.

In the last election, Jayant Sinha won comfortably defeating Congress candidate Saurabh Narayan Singh. This time though the battle is slightly tougher for Sinha with Congress tying up with Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, Jharkhand Vikas Morcha- P and RJD. So he is facing a unified opposition in his turf. However, there is some heartburn among JMM leaders over not being given this seat which has significant SC-ST population and some may help out Jayant Sinha clandestinely. CPI's Mehta is also no pushover. Stalin of Jharkhand, as he is known popularly has won the seat twice, in 1991 and 2004. In 2004, he defeated Yashwant Sinha.

Former Union Minister in the Vajpayee government and currently a vocal critic of Narendra Modi, Yashwant Sinha won thrice from Hazaribagh, Jayant Sinha claims he has his father's blessings despite differing political stance now.

Speaking to ANI, Jayant said, "I have always received the blessings of my father and I am a  loyal worker of BJP. I am fighting these elections with the support of Prime Minister and the Chief Minister and the organisational resources. We will definitely win in this election." "Mahagathbandhan has no strength. There candidate who is contesting against me is a father figure and I respect him. I want to request him to take care of his health in this extremely hot weather," Jayant said.

Elaborating about work done, "Be it the ODF initiative, Jan-Dhan Yojana or constructing Jal Minar through district mineral fund, we have excellently implemented all these Central government's initiative on the ground. Along with these, there are Central funded projects of medical college, railway line, airport, science sports centre, NTPC thermal plant among others. In all, we have brought an investment of about 25 thousand crores in the region".

Jayant Sinha got bad press for garlanding alleged lynching accused in the last year. He would be hoping to put that behind by winning from Hazaribagh. Assembly segments under Hazaribagh LS are Barhi, Barkagaon, Ramgarh, Mandu and Hazaribagh. Polling for 14 Lok Sabha constituencies in Jharkhand is being held in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh phases of polling - on April 29, May 6, May 12 and May 19 - respectively. BJP won 12 out of the 14 seats in 2014, JMM got the remaining 2. Counting is on May 23.
