In a pincer-like attack that can hurt Indian IT industry and professionals, President Donald Trump is set to sign an order overhauling work visa programmes like H1B type while a legislation proposing doubling the minimum salary of foreign workers to $130,000 is in the works.

In an interview to The Indian Express, Ambassador Pria said, "If the US does enforce some of its harsher immigration proposals, for instance, regarding H1B visas on which Indian IT companies are heavily dependent, we will be more than happy to have Indians relocate to Mexico."

Stating that there have been Mexicans coming to India for some years now, with the intent of doing business in this promising market, she said, "It is time to diversify our trade relations, and we are focussed on seizing that momentum for more Mexican companies to turn their attention to India."

Pria also said that the city of Guadalajara is already becoming a technology hub with the presence of at least 10 major Indian IT companies like TCS and Infosys.

The H1B visa is a non-immigrant visa that allows US companies to employ foreign workers in speciality occupations that require theoretical or technical expertise in specialised fields. The technology companies depend on it to hire tens of thousands of employees each year.

During his campaign, President Trump promised to increase oversight of the H-1B and L-1 visa programmes. The bill would require that employers first offer a vacant position to an equally or better qualified American worker before seeking an H-1B or L-1 visa holder.
