'Discovering witnesses is just as important as catching criminals,' said Simon Wiesenthal, a survivor of the Nazi death camps.

Similarly, for police officers and forensic experts, narrowing down on real criminals or offenders is vital. But that, sometimes, becomes a challenge due to lack of 'trace' evidence. However, Gujarat University researcher Riddhi Suthar's project may now come to their aid.

Suthar, a student at GU's department of forensic science, has done research on the various attributes of an image taken by a mobile phone. Her work revolves around a proposed method that will pinpoint the mobile through which an MMS clip is taken, which will ultimately be a boon to cyber crime detection.

"In cases of MMS crimes or other cyber crimes, offenders make a porn movie of some couple or themselves making love. When things turn sour between the partners, one of them uploads these
images on social networking websites or forwards the same as a MMS clip to the world, sometimes leading to the suicide of the girl," department professor in-charge Kapil Kumar said.

According to Suthar, officials manage to find out which computer was used to upload the image and what time.

"When the suspects are caught, there are too many to zero down on a single offender who used his mobile to take the clip. In such cases, learning or studying the attributes of an image or video helps in knowing the approximate mobile model and thus narrowing down on the suspect,'' she said.

Kumar said Suthar's research is towards proposing a method that could link the image and video with the phone through which it was captured. "This will help officials to easily and speedily narrow down on their suspects. It will also provide crucial evidence for the purpose of investigation," he said.

GU vice-chancellor Parimal Trivedi said: "Suthar's research project in mobile applications and analysis of its technology is a step towards nabbing the exact offenders. It will also help further understand the consequences of threatening cyber crimes."
GU has invested Rs7 crore in establishing hi-tech research laboratory and an additional of Rs5 crore will be invested for the same, Trivedi added.

It is to be seen whether this research is an answer to MMS  misuse.
