Gujarat Science City organises workshop on Ozone Day

With a view to create awareness about the depletion of ozone layer and its importance, Gujarat Science City, on the occasion of World Ozone Day, conducted a one-day workshop and many other activities on Thursday.

The theme of the celebration was 'Ozone layer protection: Governance and Compliance at their best', where the programme included workshop and seminar on ozone awareness, ozone game, ozone film, illustrative exhibition, slide and film show and various other demonstrations.

As many as 150 school and college teachers were present on the occasion.

The event also included a science talk by various renowned people on the need to conserve ozone and the effects of Chloro Flouro Carbons (CFC). The programme was inaugurated by Ravi Saxena, additional chief secretary, department of science and technology of the state and Dr PK Nag, director, national institute of occupational health.

"Since 1987, many efforts are being made to create awareness regarding ozone depletion, but various industrial activities still continue to release harmful gases which affect the ozone layer," said Saxena.

Talking about the depletion of ozone layer, PK Nag said, "Earth's temperature has been building up due to such activities which deplete ozone layer. If we start taking these issues seriously, it will help in preserving the ozone layer." Nag further added that such awareness creating activities should not only be organised on Ozone Day, but should be arranged on regular basis, so as to have long term effects.

Faculty member SM Jha, who was also present on the occasion, spoke on technology, "We just know how to use technology, but we don't know how to maintain it for betterment of the environment."
