AHMEDABAD: Gujarat's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will harness modern means of communication like Internet and mobile phones in its campaign for the assembly polls while the opposition Congress says it will largely rely on tried and traditional means.

"In the days to come how we will use technology to its optimum. Our IT cell is looking for every possible way to reach out to the people," BJP spokesperson Yamal Vyas told.

To begin with, the BJP has redesigned its website.

The party plans to 'bombard' mobile phone users in the state with SMSs at regular intervals, urging the people to attend its programmes and events.

"In the final days, appeals will be issued to vote for BJP candidates," said a party member involved in chalking out the BJP publicity strategy.

Asked how the party plans to use technology to reach out to people living in rural and tribal areas, Vyas said this would be done through laser shows in villages across the state.

"Through the shows, we will tell the people what we have done for their development and what we plan to do once voted to power again. This is for the first time that such a campaign will be carried out," Vyas said.

Shashiranjan Yadav, convenor of the party's IT cell, said, "We have already started a group and a blog on the net named Fans of Narendra Modi and it is receiving tremendous response.

"With the help of visuals, it is being conveyed to the net users in the state how popular (Chief Minister) Narendra Modi is and why he is so popular," Yadav added.

The Congress also plans to make use of SMS and the Internet in its poll campaign but will primarily depend on the traditional modes of communication.

"We believe in one-to-one communication. We will rely on posters, handbills and pamphlets to convey to the common man in his language what we stand for. We will call the BJP's bluff by these means," said Sanjay Divecha of the Congress party's publicity cell.
